How to Install a Mercury Starter Solenoid

    • 1). Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a wrench to loosen the nut.

    • 2). Place the wheel chocks behind the rear wheels and jack the car up with the automobile jack. Place a jack stand under the car and raise it up to the frame.

    • 3). Crawl under the car and locate the solenoid. Label the wires on the solenoid with the marker and masking tape, noting the proper placement of each wire.

    • 4). Remove the bolts from the starter using a ratchet and socket. Pull the starter away from the engine.

    • 5). Remove the solenoid retaining screws using a screwdriver. Pull the solenoid off of the starter.

    • 6). Put the new solenoid on the starter and tighten the screws with the screwdriver. Put the starter back on the engine and tighten the bolts with the socket and ratchet. Connect the electrical wires according to the tags you made and tighten the nuts with a wrench.

    • 7). Remove the jack stand from under the vehicle and lower the car back to the ground. Reconnect the battery terminal and tighten the nut with a wrench. Start the car to test the installation of the new solenoid.
